The Ensemble Cast Romantic Comedy On Satellite Tv
Putting two successful, sexy, young and hip movie stars together on the screen in a romantic comedy setting has proved a formula for success once and again at the box office. It’s hard to have a miss with a film like this, that provides that kind of hopeful, rosy feeling that never gets old. Lately, it seems, that the folks at the big Hollywood studios have decided to try and throw some multiplication into the one major movie star + another major movie star = success equation. Instead of sticking with just a couple stars in a big romantic hit, they are trying to double, triple, quadruple, or more, the number of big names hitched to an instant romance classic. This type of ensemble cast film is designed, amongst other things, to have wide audience appeal which means lots of extra tickets sold at the box office. However, there is more than a little doubt that this model of throwing as many stars onto a movie poster as can be crammed in is sustainable, or even desirable on the big screen.
An early example of this type of film is the British romantic hit Love Actually (2003). Featuring a host of internationally known British actors like Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman, and more, this Christmas themed film is still a big hit year round, and a favorite rental choice on satellite TV movie channels. The film, admittedly, has a lot going for it in terms of character and plot development, touching moments, and great romance. It hit the nail on the head in terms of accomplishing the goal of the romantic comedy: to rake in a wide audience and their wallets by pulling on a million different preferences and heartstrings at once, without being too mind numbingly unoriginal. That being said, Hollywood would not sit idly by and watch the British master such a brilliant movie concept.
In the States the first major attempt at throwing together such a romantic comedy ensemble cast came with He’s Just Not That Into You (2009). The answer back to Love Actually but with American accents, this film explores the truths and myths behind relationships and all the ways that searching for perfection can be more of a crutch and illusion than a predecessor to romance. While it’s always great to see so many beautiful, smiling faces in high definition, like Ginnifer Goodwin, Kevin Connolly, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Anniston, Jennifer Connelly, Drew Barrymore, and Bradley Cooper, past that the film doesn’t offer a lot besides the regular old tale of love and loss in modern America, it just offers them in a multi-pack.
Right in time for Valentine’s Day, and appropriately titled Valentine’s Day (2010), the latest ensemble cast romantic venture follows exactly the same format to provide even more tried and true relationship movie plotlines than ever before. This movie quite possibly breaks records for the most chick-flick archetypes in one film under two hours in length. This time featuring even more stars, including Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, George Lopez, Shirley MacLain, emma Roberts, Julia Roberts, Taylor Swift, and surely more, this is one romantic comedy that is likely to be gracing the presence of our satellite TV screens for decades of Valentine’s celebrations to come. How Romantic.
