The appropriate picture frame should also protect the image (such as Plexiglas to protect a valuable photograph), or should be constructed of materials that work well with the image (such as matted frames with protective glass to enhance and protect a paper poster).
Certain images do not need protective glass coverings (oil and acrylic paintings fall under this category). Pictures created with delicate media such as oil paints need to be exposed due to the decades long drying process. Therefore, ornately decorated love picture frames that are reminiscent of 17th and 18th century styles can frame oil and acrylic paintings in very traditional interior spaces.
Individuals should consider displaying abstract paintings without picture frames—especially if the wall or surrounding environment is austere and minimalist. Also, photographs are best displayed in metal picture frames with mat framing to protect the photograph. For more eclectic interior environments that exhibit many styles, picture frames constructed of various materials with graphic elements and bold colors can be used to highlight the different styles present.
Digital photo frames are becoming a popular alternative to traditional kids picture frames. A digital photo frame displays digital photos from the Internet or computer without the need for printing photographs. Digital photo frames often have a “slideshow” effect (photos are shown one after another). This is a great way to display pictures of loved ones.
